Introducing: The ICCA National Wild Card Round

April 5, 2010

We are excited to announce an exciting new opportunity for college a cappella groups to earn a spot at ICCA Finals: The ICCA National Wild Card Round.

The ICCA National Wild Card Round is open only to groups that placed second or third at each collegiate semifinal. Participation is optional and voluntary. The contest is based on videotaped entries, which are evaluated by some of our best judges nationwide using our judge forms, just as though it was any of our other live events.

The top-scoring group is named ICCA National Wild Card Champion and advances to ICCA Finals. It's that simple!

WHY A WILD CARD SPOT?

- It creates a level playing field between the regions, once and for all.
- It gives the nation's best groups another chance at competing on college a cappella's biggest stage.
- ICHSA Finals are now held on a separate night from ICCA Finals, so our schedule finally has room for more college groups to compete at college finals.
- We spend a lot of time, effort, and money to give the best collegiate a cappella groups the chance to perform at Lincoln Center, and we want to give as many groups as possible as many chances as possible to earn that opportunity.

WILL THIS HAPPEN EVERY YEAR?
- Absolutely. This is the launch of a pilot program. If we get enough interest in participation, we will be holding the wild card round for second- and third-place semifinalists every year!

HOW DO GROUPS PARTICIPATE?
Second-place and third-place groups have already received instructions about how to submit their video entries, which are due on Friday, April 9. A lineup of competitors will appear on our events page on Wednesday, April 7. We will announce the winner on our results page on Saturday, April 10 by 11:59 pm EST.

Thank you for sharing our enthusiasm about this exciting new opportunity for the nation's best college a cappella groups. Stay tuned this week for results of the ICCA National Wild Card Round to see who will be named champion and will earn a coveted spot on the ICCA Finals stage!

Here's a preview of the design, courtesy of Sarah Kowalis sarahkowalis.com

The designer explains the concept for this year's artwork:
"Because of this album's low-key mood, I compiled images of what a BOCA listener might be doing while listening to the CD -- going for a drive, relaxing in their favorite chair, or hanging out with a small group of friends. I took the images and blew them out so they were almost completely ambiguous and arranged them with  blocks of cool blue. The blue compliments the mellow tunes, but their sporadic arrangement nods at the upbeat songs as well. As the pictures move horizontally across the cover, they subtly start to form musical runs from a few of the tracks selected for this year's album. This theme is carried throughout as the photos dissipate into the CD case."

BOCA 2010: Best Of College A Cappella

November 20, 2009

Varsity Vocals and Total Vocal are thrilled to announce the track list for the Best Of College A Cappella 2010!

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who submitted their tracks. We know how much of each of you goes into producing these albums, and we really enjoyed listening to each and every track we received.

Hundreds upon hundreds of tracks were submitted, but we are only able to squeeze on 20 tracks. With so many groups pushing the envelope (in everything from vocalists and arrangement, to recording and production quality, to song selection and genre), selecting our lineup this year was incredibly difficult.

We want to thank you for your interest in our annual compilation, and we encourage you to participate in years to come.

Congratulations to the 20 groups who were selected! We are quite excited about this album and are working quickly to produce it. We will be in touch soon with further instructions. For now, enjoy, and congratulations! This is going to be one amazing CD.
